Bar coding the future

The future is here—and it’s bar coded.

A 2010 study conducted by researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found that a system that checks medications and doses using bar codes significantly cuts down on hospital drug errors. “We had the opportunity to design and implement a bar code-scanning system to ensure that every patient in the hospital gets the right medication at the right dose at the right time,” said lead researcher Dr. Eric G. Poon, the hospital’s director of clinical informatics.

“After implementing that new system, we found dramatic reductions in errors made during the process of administering medications,” he added. Using this system may prevent as many as 90,000 serious errors each year. T

At Electrone, we put safety first and foremost. That’s why Specimen Labels for healthcare facilities, with the use of Electrone’s Zebra Printers, can be printed at the exact point of collection with a bar coded label for a patient’s chart. These printers ultimately reduce the risk of entering incorrect information on patients. Additionally, by using the QL Plus series printers, pharmacy labels can be made that scan prescribed medicine and contain patient information. Avoid careless but critical mistakes by investing in hardware which can eliminate user error.
